Help with a SCSI set up

I have a Buslogic BT956C SCSI controller card, 7200rpm 80-pin 18GB hard drive, 68-pin to 80-pin adapter and a 68-pin ribbon.

When I hook it all up the SCSI card works, I can use the SCSI menu to configure things. I use auto configure and have the low byte/high byte settings "on" for terminator settings for the internal 68-pin connector as instructed.

Other then that, believe me when I say I am a complete dumb-ass on what to do next. The SCSI card can
see itself and recognizes the drive correctly, but if I try to format or verify it in the SCSI utility I keep getting "drive not ready". If I boot up with an IDE drive the SCSI card is correctly configured but the SCSI hard drive is not seen.

I could definately use some input on the thousands of jumper settings and what not. Don't take for granted that I know anything in your explanations, please give it to me step by step.

I have had the same results on a Via KT400 and a SiS 741 board with an Athlon.

Thanks in advance and please humor my complete ignorance.

So the SCSI cards sees the drive, but won't let you format it, correct? Are you positive that the drive is a good working drive?

correct, I tried two identical drives and got the same results. So while it is possible the drive is defective, it is unlikely at this point.

Make sure the SCSI id jumpers are removed so the drive ID will be 0. Be sure the termination select jumper and source is set on the drive. Look at your drive setup handbook or online setup information at the drive manufacturers website.

80 pin SCSI drives are very unlikely to have any jumpers you need to set. What do you have the SCSI ID set to on your 68 to 80 adapter? Set it to something 0 to 6 usually... Once you do that, you shouldn't need to format it through the SCSI card utilitities.. But make sure you have the drivers for your buslogic controller installed.

Generally you want to leave the card at "auto" termination if it has that setting.. Also, does your SCSI cable have a terminator on it as well?

Also, what version of Windows are you running?

IBM DGHS
COMP IEC-950

two default jumpers set at AUTOSTART and DIS TI SY, whatever that means.
I could move the AUTOSTART and put it in ID 0.

A BT956C is an ancient (1995) single-ended controller. The IBM DGHS 80 pin SCA drive has no provisions for termination so you will have to have a single-ended terminator on the end of your 68 pin cable and your SCA 80/68 adaptor will have to be plugged into the next connector back toward the controller. There is also a jumper to set on the drive to force single-ended operation. This deal will probably run at the SCSI/wide rate of 40Mb/s.
