Help with a really messed up video card installation

My friend just upgraded from his old sis card to a geforce mx, but nothing is working. After installing the geforce and installing drivers, his computer would restart when he reached the desktop. I've tried uninstalling his WinFast drivers, installing nVidia reference drivers, removing the card from device manager, and anything else I could think of. His computer still won't accept the Geforce if we install nVidia drivers. It'll boot up fine in standard vga mode but not with geforce drivers installed. There are no hardware conflicts. We tried installing drivers both through the WinFast installation program and through the device manager. After doing a lot of installing/uninstalling, the Display Adapters branch in his device manager is gone. Anybody know what's going on?

Did you take out the old video adapter without first removing it in device manager? If so, that can cause confusion - old video card registry entries could keep the new video card from working properly.
