help with a problem (boot problems)

So I always seem to have problems, and somebody can usually help me out, so when I have another problem i come back for help. It's a self-perpetuating cycle, i tells ye.

So here's what has me stumped: I have a not new computer (via kt133 chipset with a tbird 850). I get a new case (antec sonata) since the old one is on its last legs. I take everything out, clean it, put it in the new case. It posts fine, but upon my selecting a profile, the whole thing crashes & it's not so fun.

I know it's not the harddrive, since I booted that up on a different computer just fine. I know it's not the power supply, since the old power supply in the new case doesn't cut the mustard. I have no clue what the problem is, and I would really, really appreciate any help anybody could give me. Thanks.

ha sorry:

standard windows xp login screen. -> select "Dinglemcberry." Now ideally a nice desktop et al should come into being, but alas, it is not so: the crash & dead.

Mea culpa for poor wording.

I've tried to boot in safe mode; no dice. The old chipset was (as mentioned) a via kt133; the motherboard an iwill kk266. I've just never had anything wait to post and then load XP then crash, and it's not the harddrive at all . . . i'm at a loss. Thanks in advance for help.

When you used the harddrive in another system didn't Windows detect that this system was different and try to install 'stuff' ?? Maybe this 'stuff' is conflicting with the original mobo ??. Otherwise, its the 'usual' suspects, case standoffs 'grounding' some trace on the mobo, cable maybe damaged in the tear down/rebuild, reseat CPU, memory, AGP, PCI etc.

well, interestingly enough, the other system is nearly identical--same mobo and everything.

I'll try everything again, but i would have thought if any of those were the problem, it wouldn't have loaded as far as it does. mais c'est le guerre.

Thanks much for the help.
