Help with a new wireless router...

I just purchased a D-Link 614+ wireless router. I have never owned a router before so I was hoping that the AT community could point me towards a few good resources regarding what I should and should not set up to maintain a secure network. Also, is it possible to disable the wireless portion if I have no wireless cards?

And a last question, it seems that my network got a bit slower after installing the router. Any ideas what may have caused this and/or how to fix it?

This should be a good start for reading.

I'd enable WEP, enable MAC filtering, and disable the beacon if possible. And yes from the configuration page you should be able to find a place to disable the wireless functionality.
