I was reacently contacted by my cousin to help her with her Dell Inspiron 8200 laptop because it was loaded down with spyware and in her words was "running very slow". I figured a format would fix this and I would be done in under an hour.... well I figured wrong.

I formated the system (Win XP Pro SP2) without a problem and began to install drivers (all drivers came from support.dell.com). I installed the chipset first, and then I attempted to install the integrated NIC drivers (3c920). The driver install was unsucessfull, saying it couldn't find the drivers for this device. I thought fine, and I tried to add the device by choosing "don't search, choose the driver to install" and after loading the driver files, it still tells me that it can't find the driver for the device.

I am a L2 DMC tech for Dell so I looked up her service tag at work to ensure that I indeed had the correct driver, and knew the exact model of NIC I was dealing with (3com 3c920). When I got off work I decided to go to 3com's site and download their driver (not that it's really any different) and try to install that. Same result.

I disabled and re-enabled the "onboard NIC" in BIOS, and attempted the above steps again. Still no-go. I then went back to device manager and selected "don't search I will choose the driver to install" and forced it to install the 3c920 driver and then restarted. The system booted back up and I checed device manger again, it ouput "This device cannot start. (Code 10)".

I then decided to try a 3c905x driver to see if it would work off that, still a no go. Still code 10.

I then decided that this coud just be a jacked up XP install, so I formated the system again, and did all the above steps. with the same result.

Too long didn't read
I get a solid amber light on the NIC. The NIC does not see my cable modem. The NIC is enabled in BIOS. The NIC can be seen in windows as "ethernet controller" but I cannot install the drivers. Re-installed windows, re-installed drivers, still same Error Code 10. Somebody Help!!!!

I menrioned I do work do work for Dell, and I am just trying to avoid dispatching a mobo and a tech out to her house.

Have you tried a different NIC? Maybe the onboard one went bad. If I recall, doesn't Dell have a built in diagnostics for it?

Either that or it really isn't the correct driver. 3Com is a real pain in the ass when it comes to this. Even when the model # is the same, the damn thing won't work unless it's the EXACT OEM driver that's downloaded from their site, which is another pain in the ass to navigate through for searching the exact OEM model#.

Yes, Dell does have 32-big diags that you can run however my cousin lost her CD and the only one you can download requires you to use floppys, wich I don't have, and I don't have a floppy drive for her machine either.

It is the OEM driver wich is why I can't figure this out.
