Hi,
im a LONG time reader (like 2 years) of anand and the threads, and ive never had a problem that was serious enought or I didnt find the answer to here! (lucky me!)

Ok heres the deal, I got a 9800np at bb like almost 3 months ago for $230 on an open box find! But due to some problems with my XP333's NB fan dieing i couldn't use it (mb promptly died and i learned iwill put NO TIM on the nb heatsink, CRAZY!). Now ive got my machine setup on a Epox 8kra2+ that i love.
now, the problem is, the 9800 shows up as a 9800PRO for some odd reason. At first i was all happy and such, but in games like Morrowwind and Call of Duty demo i get weird blue triangular polygons on everyting. Im assuming that its cause my 9800 (with the Infineton mem) is being run at 9800pro speeds. So I installed powerstrip and clocked the core and mem down some and that helped. Ive already removed and cleaned the drivers twice and still it comes up as a 9800PRO.

Is there a solution to this other than the PowerStrip workaround that i dont know of? Should i just get some ramsinks and be happy with my 9800PRO??

well tyia

Ok, first many 9800 np's show up as pro's, even though they're not. Now, I assume your card was originally not overclocked at all? What were the speeds before you changed them with powerstrip? It sounds like your card might just be a dud.

yeah powerstrip said that that core was 325 mem 290. I actually brought the first on back to bb and got a new on because of something unrelated and got a new one, so it was an unopened 9800.

but if lots of 9800s show up as 9800pro, isnt there some fix??

**edit**
no, i didnt overclock it at all or flash the bios.

No, there is no "fix". Nothing is wrong with it recognizing as a Pro - it has the exact same architecture. It recognizes it's chipset as a Pro, but the drivers to nothing to alter the clock speed it runs at, and indeed you have verified for yourself it's running at the stock 325/290 of the non-pro. The same thing happened with my non-pro, and virtually all others out there.

That triangular pattern you describe is a weird one. Do you get it on all games? Is your case hot? Is this only after extended periods of time? Have you tried underclocking the card?

If you get those artifacts on pretty much all games, and your case isn't a convection oven then I'd assume one of two things. A driver problem (try fully reinstalling, etc) or a defective card. You can register the card on ATI's website and RMA it if you still have problems.

Make sure the HSF is attached properly and that the fan is running on the card. See how hot the memory chips are running (ie touch one of them during 3d operation).

You might want to get better cooling in your case (if you don't already have 1-2 exhaust fans and possibly an intake fan also).

actually, im running a pretty modded skyhawk case, 4610, Ive got 2 120mm fans on the side 2 80s in front, 1 on top and 1 in back(im gonna try to get some pic, no digital camera). cooling in the case isnt a problem. If you read my first post, yes, i did underclock, and it did help. I know the architecture is the same, but thats what a cards bios is for(among many other duties), to tell the drivers that it is a non-pro, or at least thats what i assumed. since there is no driver issue to be had, basicaly the cooling on my card got fubared and ill beef it up a lil, maybe some as3 and ramsinks will be a nice project.

thanks

(wow, i suck at spelling, nice...)

If you underclocked the card, and it did help then the card is defective. RMA it, because it most definately should run at stock speed with zero problems, let alone the fact that most 9800's o/c incredibly (especially on the core speed).

See this thread. Sounds like anything above a 9600np will be able to get it.
