help with 802.11g speed issue

Hey, i just upgraded wireless B to G. and the speed improvement is minimal. I used to get about 300-500KB/sec on B (which is 11mbit) And after the upgrade I get between 500KB-1MB/sec... I was hoping for a bigger improvement than that...can anyone tell me why the speed sucks???? even at 50% efficiency, the 54mbit G should be able to do 3MB/sec!
