Help with 4 port router and DSL with PPPoE

I have a Linksys 4 port DSL/Cable router and everything is working fine as far as the internal LAN goes... but when I try to get it to access my DSL Provider (bellsouth.net) via PPPoE it can't. I've set everything to what my ISP says I should (server assigned everything... correct username/password) but the thing just can't connect.

One difference between me and the world is that everyone seems to have an actual DSL modem in their house. My service comes from some cat5 that runs out of the telex box on the outside of my house and inside into the router or ethernet card. I have no idea where any actual DSL modem might be. The troubleshooting tips in my manual say "Reset the DSL modem" but I obviously can't.

Anyone have ANY experience, thoughts?

Thanks!

What's version do u use for it? I mean the shareware for the Ethenet Linksys. The version 1.35 is now available on website. I think you need to update it, then try it. I'll work, I hope.

Are you prhaps using an internal PCI DSL modem?

And, definitely try to upgrade the Linksys to the newest firmware.

I have upgraded to the latest firmware.

I have no DSL modem. I finally got in touch with a tech from my ISP. They said my neighborhood has integrated fiber in the loop, so I CAN'T use a DSL modem... I simply connect a NIC to the CAT5 from my telex box...

So I'm wondering if there's any way to get this Linksys router to work if you've got fiber...

This will sound strange but I recently had a similar problem with verizon pppoe, username/password wouldn't work. Fixed it by trying the connecting via dynamic ip, apparently verizon either switched certain regions or outsourced.
