Help with 3200+ and a7n8x

I've never once had a problem with getting a cpu to run at the correct speed and most times over, but for some reason i cannot for the life of me get my brothers amd barton 3200+ to run at it's 2.4ghz speed, i can get the fsb at 400mhz but the highest i get the cpu speed to is around 1.8 or so. he has an asus a7n8x motherboard. could anyone point me in the right direction as far as what i would need to do so it will run at the speed it was supposed to?

Since that Barton is probably locked, the only way to OC is by raising the FSB, and you need to hit 200 FSB to reach the 3200+ speed (11x200 = 2.2ghz).

You said the highest speed that you can get is 1.8ghz. The default speed of a 2500+ is 1.83ghz (11x166), and it likely means you've got a setting in the BIOS wrong. You need to adjust the FSB manually in the BIOS and raise it in small increments to test stability. Hopefully, you'll be able to hit 2.2ghz, but you may have to raise the Vcore voltage and the memory voltage.

What speed RAM are you running? PC2100, PC2700, etc.

oops yeah i meant 2.2ghz not 2.4 i can get it up to that by setting the multiplier at 11.0x and the cpu frequency at 200mhz, but it is far from stable, it crashes after a minute or so of a prime 95 torture test or even me surfing the web
ORSAIR XMS Extreme Speed Series 184 Pin 512MB DDR PC-4000PRO is the kind of ram he's using, he has 2 512mb sticks and the speed is DDR500(PC4000) so i really don't know whats goin wrong, do you think it's lack of voltage?

Try running only one stick of RAM. Sometimes the dual channel won't work right and will cause instability. Also make sure the RAM timings are appropriate for the memory used. Sometimes that fast memory needs more relaxed timings.
