Hello I have a friend that wants at least a 30 inch as a main monitor and 2 non widescreens on each side. No gaming at all. would like possibly NTSC t.v. windowed. What video card and monitors would work best? I was thinking the Dell 30 and two 19s in portrait on both ends might look nice? any ideas? thanks

hmm...i would say two video cards, i'm not sure about the configuration...i assume a PCI-E and a PCI. I would say use a matrox triple-head, but i don't think it works with different size displays.

He's going to need 2 video cards.

One with Dual-Link DVI for the 30in (this is non-negotiable) and a second dual head card for the 19in screens.

Yeah I didn't know how the matrox triple-head would handle the different sizes of res either. so I too was thinking a PCI-e for the dell and then something for the other two... don't know what cards to use but I'll keep looking. thanks for your reply

A much more popular config is 20:30:20 with the 20's widescreens in portrait. 19's have a high pixel pitch and will look grainy and out of place next to a 30", which has one of the lowest pixel pitch, like the 20's.

I'd suggest two Dell 2007's and one 3007:)

You need two video cards as stated.

It's very important that you understand that the PCI-E card driving the Dell 30in is Dual-Link DVI. This is NOT the same as dual DVI ports.

Also what mobo does he have? A lot of motherboards have dual PCI-E 16x slots. This doesnt necessarily mean it is SLI or Crossfire, but if it has a second PCI-E 16x slot, then you can get a cheapy PCI-E dual head card and save yourself some headaches trying to find the right PCI card.

Hehe I was just looking at the 2007 to see if it could pivot into portrait mode, doesn't state it can so must not. :( would have been nice but not required. and yes will try to lean this way as agreed that the pixel pitch needs to be a better match. thanks.

Well its a HP box... sorry to say but yep thats what it is with one PCI-E slot and three PCI slots. thanks for the info on the Dual-Link DVI. I read that at the Dell site and wonder if it was different then just a dual head card and now I know it is thanks :)
