Help with 2001 Chevy Suburban

Hey,

I'm trying to hardwire my radar detector into my 2k1 suburban, but first I need to find an ignition triggered wire. I'm thinking the sunroof switch would probably be the best place, but I'm not sure how to get that little upper console thing off. I really don't want to take off the whole headliner, just that little mini-console with the reading lights, garage door opener, and sunroof switch. Any ideas from any car nuts out there?

if that thing has a power outlet which i assume it does, tap into that

if not, the sunroof switch will always have 12V going to it, so that would work too.
 
Just tap off the radio power wire. It's on when the key is....
Radar detectors don't draw much juice and work most of the
time, but those laser speed guns are hard to evade....

now is all you need an ignition switch? or do you need power also? If just a signal to tell teh radar detector to take power, you can always go into your fuse box. For my subwoofers remote terminal and my electric fans remote terminal i use the A/C fuse (pull the fuse out, put wire in when pushing fuse back in).

OK, well sorry if I pissed anyone off...I didn't think we'd get into an argument about whether I speed or not by asking where to hardwire a radar detector, but I guess that's where it led. Anyway, its not like I'm barreling down roads at 100mph, I just want to have it in case I'm going a few MPH over the speed limit and one of our cops is sitting there. Our cops are so anal, they will give you a ticket for going 5 mph over the speed limit. Anything for money. Hell, they sent around a new recruit yesterday to knock on people's doors and ask if they had a dog, then if so, whether they had a damn liscense for it! Of course NO ONE had one, so they gave out a bunch of tickets.

Anyway, being as I'm trying to mount the radar to the towards the top of the windshield, the sun roof switch is probably the best place to get the power. But, its behind a plastic console about a foot square, and I have no clue how to get that off. I figured someone here might have experience, so who knows.

Anyway, I will give that LS1TECH place a try too, thanks LAUST. And thanks to everyone who has constructively pitched in!

Radars detectors are NOT illegal in Oregon. I don't know where you heard that but it is completely wrong. There are NO laws restricting radar detector use in Oregon, nor will there be any time soon.

If thinking that detectors were illegal in Oregon made you "glad," then I guess ignorance really is bliss, eh? 😛

And radar detectors serve a valuable purpose. On most highways, the flow of traffic tends to run about 5-10 mph over the speed limit. The SAFEST speed to travel on ANY highway is with the flow of traffic. Running both faster or slower is dangerous. Particularly much slower. Some unscrupulous police officers like to hang out on fast moving highways and ticket drivers for going with the flow, even if only for 5 mph over. Detectors protect your from that. The other danger are those photo radar vans, which will literally give you a ticket for only 1 mph over.
We're all glad that you think you're perfect, Cobalt, but you're not, and your arrogance and your desire to inflict your ideals on others are insulting. Give it up, you're wrong. In the meantime, both your and rbloedow need to STFU and keep your slow white-knuckle asses in the right lane. :disgust:
