HELP, wireless problem

Ok, so I recently set up a wireless network, and enabled WEP encryption using a password, and I'm only using the first key. The problem is that everytime I start the computer, the connection will work for like 5 minutes, and then it stops, even though my computer can see the router, I just cant send or receive anything. After I restart the computer, works again for a few minutes, then stops. I have XP Pro SP1, and I tried using both static and dynamic ip address, enable or disable firewall, none of these things make any difference. I'd like to hear any ideas from you guys, or if you have seen this problem before, how you fixed it.

Ok, I'll try turning it off when I get home, but for security reasons, how can I fix this and keep using WEP?
Or is WEP not necessary to prevent unauthorized access to the network?

Have to test it without WEP first to see if the WEP is what's causing the problem or not. If not, it oculd be a hardware issue
