Help. WinXP install problem "no fixed disk"

For some reason when I start my XP installation, at the "partition" screen neither one of my harddrives is recognized.

The box has a "no fixed disk" message.

Any suggestions?

My system is currently a win98 system as outlined below:. Do i need to reformat the hard drive before loading XP? My preference would be to wipe my entire hard drive clean and start fresh.

I'm gonna take a shot in the dark here but are you certain that your hard drives are connected directly to the motherboard and not via a PCI-based controller card? If you are using a controller card then you need to provide the installer with drivers early in the process (it actually prompts you to press a key if you need to give it drivers for your controller card). Outside of that, I have no idea why 98 would see your drives but the XP installer wouldn't.

I would strongly suggest you do wipe your drive and start fresh. And give NTFS some thought while you're at it.

Good luck!

Yes, my harddrives are connected directly to my m/b. Does it matter that my hard drives currently are formatted with 98 and other apps on them? or should I format my hard drive first then try to install?

I'd hate the wipe it clean and not be able to install XP. Then I would not be able to get back online for help etc.

You dont have to wipe the drive, the installer will (or should) gladly format it for you. I don't know what is going on with your install but this'll serve as a ^bump and maybe someone else will. I'll keep my eyes open.

You might want to try posting a link to this thread over in the tech support forum. Maybe one of the members who frequent that area will be able to help.

It sounds like the disk controller you're using doesn't have in-box support in WinXP.

You'll have to download the vendor's driver and copy it to a floppy and hit F6 when prompted during XP's text-mode bootup in the installation process.
