maxtor 160gb hd, just came back from RMA

i keep getting blue screens of death whenever i'm installing windows. I jsut went to a computer shop, where they used another stick of ram...which caused the same blue screen, thus eliminating the ram incompaitiblity. I am now thinking it might be the video card - since its so new, or the mobo being broken. I've already reset the cmos. I've reformatted the HD god knows how many times, but i keep getting the same problems with memory dumps and other blue screens of death. Also i've gotten done with installing XP, but i cannot boot into windows, it will just reboot itself after showing a blue screen for a fraction of a second. I'm really desparate guys, lets hear some advice!

the HDs are brand spanking new....one is a return from RMA the other is a retail seagate 160gig

the mobo....well, i guess that'd be a decent idea since i tried booting using another piece of RAM and it happened as well....

Try these two things:

1) Run memtest86 on your machine for a few hours. This should heat up your CPU and stress your memory. It's a good test to make certain at least that part of the machine is stable.
2) Try disabling power management in the bios. I've seen that cause reboot/bluescreen problems while installing XP.

no, i'm not using a RAID config....i just happen to have two HDs, i don't care which one i use...but i just wish i could get it up. I'll be running memtest86 again pretty soon, just to make sure its not the corsair. The first time i ran it, i got bunches and bunches of error from the ram....but i ran it again, and it was errorless....go figure

The STOP 0x50 number and message "page_fault_in_non_paged_area" is a ram issue. Believe it or not, if there is too much ram installed in the machine during the XP installation you'll get this error. I work for MS XP Support and see this a fair bit. Remove some of the ram before the install, then reseat it after XP is installed.
Also, which version of XP are you using? The original release CD or one with SP1 or SP2 on it? If it's just the first one you're not going to get all of the hard drive available to you. XP at the time could only recognize up to 137gb drives.

well the weird part about all of this is that the computer was working fine up to a point:

I had another stick of 512 ram in my machine, an ocz plat pc3200 rev1...case 2-3-2-5

The machine was running smoothly and everything, but i had to remove that stick because it was unnecessary and I sold it here on anandtech

The next time i boot up w/o the ocz stick, i start getting this blue screen, yet i can get into windows....and the when i reboot...no more windows for me =(

so idk what the hell is going on, since the HD was partitioned the same way, the rams have been moved up to slot 1,2 instead of 2,3....and everything stayed the same

I'd say check the temp of the system/CPU/PSU, I've had heat issues cause the exact same problem you're describing, a reapplication of the thermal compound fixed my problem. Might not be your problem, but would be worth checking into at the least.

How long are you running memtest for? Maybe you need looser timings or higher voltages for your ram to support higher speeds/tighter timings. It definitely seems to be a RAM issue, even if the computer shop replaced the ram.

I've ran memtest with one stick for as long as overnight....i'll run them again soon, once school stops being so busy. I guess i might head out for fry's or some other place and grab a 512 stick of some other type of memory. I figured since the blue screen showed up again in the computer shop (with a different type of memory) it wouldn't be a memory problem.
