help!! windows won't boot with new drive

Hello,

Here is what I had before:

WD 80 with OS on it
WD 120 with stuff on it

I wanted to install a brand new Maxtor 200 GB. I took out the 120, and put in the 200. Then I ran the Maxblast program. It copied all the files from the 80 onto the 200 just fine. I did all that it asked me to and restarted. Everything starts up fine but i get a "Windows has encountered a problem and needs to close....win32" (not BSOD). At first, I just clicked close, ignoring the problem.

I then took out my 80 and put in my 120. When I proceeded to start the computer, it just stalls at the windows starting up screen (however, it doesn't even say "windows starting up").

So, I took out the 120 and put the 80 back in and windows starts fine (but I still get the same error message).

Can any of you give me a hand? I have a lot of stuff on the 120 that I need!

Thanks a lot.

Since there are a couple of WD drives involved, realize that if one of them is on its own data cable, then you want to set them for Single Master in that case. That is done by taking the jumper cap off the pins altogether. If you don't, it can have weird effects including hangs before, during or after POST.

If it were me, I would do a fresh installation of Windows on the desired drive, while it's the only drive in the system, then reinstall whatever software you need afterwards, then add the other drives to the system. If your WinXP CD doesn't have Service Pack 2 onboard, then take precautions against worm attack.

Mech,

Thanks for your help. I really don't want to reinstall Windows though!

Here is an update: I went into the bios, and it seems as if the computer thinks that the new 200 Maxtor is G. Isn't it supposed to be the new C drive?

This is also the same when I click on My Computer - the 200 GB is shown as G.

Is there another solution Mech?

Thanks.

There is no other work around this. Do the fresh install as mech has stated on the desired drive and then go from there.

If bios can detect your drives at boot up, then shouldn't have anything to worry about. just need to set them up correctly. Make sure 200GB is jumpered to Master and connected to Primary IDE with no other drives, and if it still won't boot up, then something went wrong with the Maxblaster process. Does your bios have a "priority boot device" setting?

You could try Acronis True Image. They have a free trial download, but I don't know if it's got limited features. http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/products/trueimage/. Have the 80 (master) and 200 (slave) installed on your system and bootup to OS on the 80gb. install acronis and run it. It'll ask you few questions and reboot the system. It'll do all the migration automatically after it reboots. After that, remove 80gb and set 200gb as Master drive to see if it will bootup. I've used it twice and both times worked.

Listen to this man, he knows what he's talking about. Installing WinXP is not big deal and, in the end, will save you hours of troubleshooting and frustration.

Thanks all for your replies.

What happened is that Dell has a FAT partition (on the 80) that MaxBlast cannot copy (to the 200). So I'm going to use Partition Magic or Norton Ghost. Does anybody have any experience with this?

Thank you all for your help.
