HELP Windows File Sharing

Hi Guys,

I'm not even sure if this is possible but here goes.

I'm often repairing roommates PC's and need a file or program off my own.

I'd like to share my whole drive, without having windows automatically display this share in my roommates my network places.

Basically I want it to be shared, but without easy access...ie type the network path to access.

I'm not concerned about security, but by not having it pop up as a share they wouldn't even know where to look anyways.

Any Ideas?

Mike

P.S. If I could get rid of the share hand icon overlay on my PC that'd be nice too...I'd rather not have them on every folder.

uh, it should already be shared by default. Go to \\computername\c$ to access the root of the C drive and all files and folders underneath. You just have to have an admin username and password for it.

Yeah, on XP Pro, there are the administrative shares. The entire hard drive is shared by default as a hidden administrative share. You can access it via a remote computer, but you need to have an account with administrative credentials to utilize it.

When I try that the user name is greyed out and populated with COMPUTER_NAME/Guest.

But if your using XP Home you've only got simple file sharing right? I've only got XP Home on my laptop....so i guess this won't work for me.

Sorry, takes my brain a few minutes to wake up..

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa

The values are:
ForceGuest=1 : Use this value to force guests on
ForceGuest=0 : Use this value to force guests off

you have simple file sharing on. Simple file sharing is as bad as drowning baby kittens.

Oops, that was on a machine I just loaded....turned off simple file sharing and \\computername\c$ works great
