I put together a new rig for my boss. Everything was working great. Windows was installed no problems. I put his old dvd drive in a Toshiba sd-m1202. It's there in the bios but windows doesn't see. I tried going into control panel and install new hardware but no good. He lost all the drivers and software, he doesn't even know his email address. On the old computer, I looked in add and remove programs and the only thing that I saw was Divx codec 3.1 alpha release most likely, b3d projector, delfin media viewer, enhanced medialoads and medialoads. I think some of these are for looking at porn. If I can fine Divx codec you think windows is going to see the drive? Is there some thing I can do to make this thing work?

Windows should see it even without software.

did you jumper it correctly? which ide channel is it on, where on the cable is it, what else is on the cable? Check your connections too. the red on the molex and the (red pin 1) on the ribbon cable should be next to each other. Make sure they are plugged in correctly.

Yes it's in the bios. First I set it as slave and burner as master on the middle ide and burner on the end. After that I switched them to dvd master at the end and burner as slave in the middle. After that I set it to sc I think that's what they call it. I just don't get it. Could It be because windows waas already working with just the burner?

OK...as long as you have the (secondary) master on the end of the cable....OK. Sounds like you have the jumpers OK. I'd put the Burner on as master and the DVD ROm on as slave.

Cables plugged in OK?

Now, does the burner get a drive letter? and the DVD-ROm not get a drive letter?
Does the burner work with the DVD ROm hooked up?

The dvd player never gets a drive letter. Windows doesn't think it is there. It opens, closes and is in the bios as slave or master but that's it. The burner gets a drive letter and works fine.

Does it appear in settings > control panel> system>Device manager? If it does double click it and see what it says.

What version of windows BTW?

I have to head off to bed.

The other thing you could do is put the dvd rom on as the only drive on the channel as the master and see if it works.

The DVD rom could be defective or have an interface problem...pin or something.

The os is 98se and it doesn't show up in device manager. The power supply is a Antec 430w. I did find that the drive came in a kit with a video card but the old computer doesn't have it. It was useing the onboard graphics. The only other thing I was thinking is to update the bios but was unable to find one that didn't need a floppy that I didn't have last night.

ok, try this:
Click Start, then Run... , and type regedit
Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\IOS
if you see a value named "NoIDE", Delete it, close regedit and reboot!

NoIDE or anything like that wasn't there so I decide to buy a new one. It showed up fine and all end good. What's wrong with the old I have no idea.
