HELP Windows 7 Rearranging desktop with monitor unplug?

Windows 7 has an issue or a "feature" where a DP or HDMI monitor is detected as removed when turned off. This leads to windows rearranging windows and icons on the entire desktop on the remaining monitor(s).

Something nobody seems to have mentioned is what happens when you unplug a monitor in a multi-monitor setup.
Which is that all remaining monitors are disabled except for the primary and any other configuration, such as rotation is also lost.

I my case I have 6 30" displays on 1 computer (eyefinity 6). The issue with turning the monitors on and off is annoying, but tolerable. But I recently had to replace a failed display.
So my entire setup was lost and I had to re-enable and re-arrange all my remaining monitors. When I plugged in the new one, I would think it would just work right? No once again I had to re-arrange my desktop with the new monitor.

I found that if I unplug a monitor at a time and set up the desktop windows will remember it if I get to that exact setup again, so I unplugged each one of my monitors then every 2 and so on to so windows knew nearly every monitor combination, to keep it usable with another failure.

I tried my other setups, with both ATI and NVIDIA cards and some with DVI and they all have the same problem.
Windows XP did not have this problem, a monitor was detected as removed, but the remaining monitors stay exactly as they were.

So the big question. Does anybody know any way to stop windows from acting like this? All I want is to be able to unplug or plug in a monitor and have my other monitors remain unchanged, something that was not an issue before.

Thanks

Actually, I don't have an answer to your question. I HAVE experienced the same sort of inconveniences: I have an LCD monitor with 4:3 aspect ratio using the analog VGA plug, and I have an HDTV 16:9 using mini-HDMI. The first of these has been designated as "primary display" in the nVidia control panel.

So there are certain situations -- unplugging and re-connected the HDTV for example -- which leaves me with icons scattered across both units, unfortunate changes in resolution, etc.

Usually, I don't have much of a problem -- TV for me is a "24/7" situation. Or -- when I leave the house or go to sleep, I may put the HDTV in an energy-saving mode with no display, and I flip my KVM to a "dead" selection -- putting the "primary" into an amber "sleep" mode.

If someone posts here with some insights, I -- too -- will be very interested in what they say.

I have a similar question about using two 5.1 audio systems: my Logitech Z640 PC system, and my Onkyo receiver configured for its 5.1 speakers. I was getting ready to post that and related questions on another (new) thread.

But now, I'm a bit tired, needing a nap. So I'll . . . do it later . . .
