HELP - Win98SE, explorer.exe crashes on startup - can't use computer

Girlfriend was upgrading to IE 5.5 and let it download overnight... Next day lots of instability in AOL... Upon rebooting, explorer.exe crashes comp on startup and you can't get past it... even in Safe mode... It's either a GPF or invalid page fault (i forget which) in <unknown module>

I can go to DOS, i've tried replacing explorer.exe and restoring the registry from a backup, but to no avail...

Please give me some ideas... Will reinstalling 98SE on top of it work?

OT OH! AOHell uses and integrated IE so you've completely jazzed it by installing a newer copy. I've repaired a few computers in a similar situation. After I spent 8 hours trying to fix the first one, I reformatted the drive and started from scratch....and that's how I fixed the others from there. Hate to tell you that and I hope someone who's better than me can help, but personally I would wipe and start over. Installing 98SE will NOT fix it.

The best thing to try first is go to Add Remove Programs and select IE 5.5. It will bring up and option where you will have the choice to "repair" the installation. Let it repair and keep your fingers crossed. You MIGHT also try installing the newest version of AOHell. If this doesn't work, you are best off formatting. Look at it this way my friend, you can spend many hours trying to fix it or you can spend a couple hours reinstalling everything. Personally, I choose the later. Also, I would CAN AOHell and go with a REAL ISP on that nice clean system, LOL.

Good Luck! 🙂

thanks man... this is girlfriend's parents' comp and ALL they use it for is AOL...

I think reinstalling 98 will allow me to get into windows, and from there I will uninstall both IE and AOL and reinstall them...

I have to agree with badThad. I have never been able to successfully do the "repair" option and wound up doing the FDISK/Format thang. I also understand how people get used to AOL and it's "User friendly, It's so EASY" crap. It's fine until it screws up, or you update Windows. I've had a customer install a Microsoft "Critical Update" and have AOL go sour. Good Luck!🙂
