I installed Windows 98 on my sisters Soni VAIO Pentium 166 computer with 40 MB of memory. Everything seemed to be OK until I installed AOL 6.0 for them (I tried to get them to buy a cable modem). Now, whenever they open up AOL and try to dial out, they get an error that there are not enough system resources to open the I/O port. When you go check the modem, it gives the same message when you try the "more info" under diagnostics and the modem is obviously not working. It says it is a DSVD 28.8 modem. The strange thing to me is that in teh System Manager, there is a Heading for 28.8 DSVD Modem which you expand to see the modem and also a heading for Modems which lists the modem again -- It does that every time you install it. It said something about installing a PCI something (not device) when the modem was installed which made no sense to me. What does that mean ? It does not say insufficient memory -- is it the same thing (I did not think so but have no idea)? If you go to the system manager and dfelete the modem and reboot, it reinstalls the modem and it works a few times and then teh same message pops up. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

It needs the PCI serial controller installed. I had a devil of a time getting a couple different Winmodems to install that right. The driver for it, ideally, is on the disk that comes with the modem. I don't know why, but it may take a few tries to get it to find it. Try deleting the modem from the device list and letting it install again from the next boot up. If it says it can't find that driver, point it to different parts of the CD. The last one I installed would only work with the latest driver installation file downloaded from the modem manufacture's website. Kinda sucks if there isn't a second PC available, eh?

Why does it work initially and then stop working if it needs a PCI Serial Controller installed ? That makes no sense to me.

It's always needed and used that controller. Win98 doesn't have a native driver for it, so it needs the install disk. I have no idea why it was blown away in the first place though. Perhaps it needs updating?

Would it be easier to just use a new modem ? I have one I can stick in and give her.

Actually I have the disk and I am pretty sure that it installed the driver in question (PCI Controler or whatever it was). The modem works for a while in Windows 98 and then stops wiht the message that system resources are not available and the I/O port won't open. If the PCI Controller was not installed, it would never work at all would it ? I am just confused I guess.

So, if you run diagnostics, "more info" for the modem, it sees it and gives the info on it? Queer problem, if so.

The last time I had resource problems, it was because of Office 2000. Everytime I install it, my resources just continue to drop. So, I removed it! Remove AOL 6.0 and put an older version in. If that works, you'll have to go over the situation with AOL tech support...
