Hey, first post here.

According to my hardware monitor, my 80mm panaflo fan on the heatsink is running at 1300-1500 rpm. The rated speed is like 3500 rpm. I had to get the 2 fin connector to hook it into power. Maybe i did something wrong? Help would be appreciated. Btw, if this is of any importance, i'm running a 2.4c on an is7 with an alpha pal8942 heatsink.

Thanks

Are you sure it's a 12V one and not a 24V one? The model number on the label will have either a 12 or a 24 in it, depending. Also, if you didn't get the power and ground wires in the correct holes of the 3-pin plug, you might be in Big Trouble.

Seems like the speed you might get if you hooked it to 5 volts instead of twelve.

Did you check that the model number on the fan is right, and not the low power version.

Don't they recommend that you do not plug in those super high output fans into the motherboard?

Make sure you got a 12 volt version of the fan and not a 24 volt version. Both are out there.

The model number of the 12V version should look some thing like: FBA08A12x1A, the "12" being the voltage of the fan.

The 24V model number would look like: FBA08A24x1A, the "24" being the voltage of the fan.

Another possibility is that your hardware monitor is reading the fan speed wrong. The software uses a divider to count the fan pulses from the tach output and it may be using the wrong divider. Motherboard Monitor has an adjustable divider so you can fix this if it's wrong, most other monitoring apps aren't able to do that.

Panaflo fans don't support RPM monitoring feature - that's why.
The optional third wire is for fan-locked alarm feature, I recall reading from one of their brochures.

Yup, ya got it. Panaflos that support RPM monitoring just hit market but I forgot what they were called.

Actually Panaflo fans do support rpm monitoring, it's just that the majority that are sold to us computer geeks don't. You can get rpm monitoring fans from several places but you need to look for the extension "BX" on the end of the model number. A regular 80mm L1A with rpm monitoring has a PN of FBA08A12L1BX. You can get these "BX" Panaflos from Digi-key among other places.

If lilstd's hardware monitor is showing rpm on his Panaflo fan, he's either got a "BX" version or he's monitoring the wrong fan. A non-BX version would not show an incorrect rpm, it would show "0".

I've been buying the rpm monitoring "BX" version of the regular Panaflo fans for at least 3 years, they're not new, just very difficult to find. Perhaps more dealers are starting to carry them now that there's this interest in "quiet PCs".
