Ok I recently thought I had worn out my old ps/2 scroll mouse and bought a Logitec replacement.

However the old mouse and the new Logitec also exhibit "jerkyness" when moving around the screen. This is most noticeable in the diagonal movement. :(

I'm talking about the movement of the pointer around the screen as opposed to the feeling of the mouse btw ;)

I even tried an old microsoft mouse and it's the same problem yet again.

The next step is to try an even older serial mouse.

I went round to my mates house last night to check out the new Logitec mouse on his system and it was very similar - he is using a USB connection wireless mouse and it is as smooth as silk.

Id there something I am missing here? Are USB mice smoother running than PS/2 connected mice?

The reason this is bugging me is that it's nearly impossible to get accurate shots in CS when the mouse jerks around :(

It's OKish in windows but really awful while gaming.

To check out my system please see My Toy below.

Where i used to work we had a similar thing. We cured it by updating the video drivers (or reinstalling them if they were already the latest). If that fails, then look to see if anything is running in the background, e.g. virus checker, scheduled task, or even a virus (but unlikely), etc. If it comes to the worst then try reinstalling windows, i know it drastic, but if you still got the same problem, then its hardware realted, maybe your motherboard.

Try this program to set the sample rate for your mouse...

http://www.bluesnews.com/files/misc/ps2mouserate.shtml

USB mice default to a high sample rate, that is why your friend's mouse seems smoother. Set the rate to 80 or 100 Hz. Some people like to set it all the way up to 200 Hz, but that seems a bit overkill, plus it eats CPU time.

If you are using win2k then you can set the sample rate on your mouse through device manager.

If that doesn't work, then make sure your drives have DMA enabled. Also run "msconfig" and check what programs are running at startup.

I don't think anyones mentioned mouse drivers? try different ones maybe?

One problem I have is when I move my mouse quite quick to do a 180 in Quake it doesn't do it unless i use the whole width of the mousepad or it just refuses to do the full turn, whereas if I move the mouse really slowly it does a 180 easily. Increasing the ps/2 rate to 200 helped a bit, but certainly didn't solve the problem :( My sensitivity isn't that low, and I even bought a new mouse to see if it was because my old mouse had worn out.

OK.
So far I have tried:

1. Standard ME mouse drivers
2. Logitech drivers
3. Installing the correct mouse driver from the cabs directories manually
4. A Filand PS/2 mouse
5. A Logitech PS/2 mouse
6. A Microsoft PS/2 mouse
7. A refresh rate of 200

and the reslults.....cue drum roll............

zip/nada/zero - same as usual :(

Need to hunt out my old Microsoft serial mouse and see if it has something to do with the PS/2 ports?

Did you check if DMA is enabled on your hard drives?

Did you check msconfig to see what programs are starting up?

I use an old Logitech 3-button, serial mouse on my spare computer. Using the Mouseware 9.xx driver, you should be able to adjust the refresh rate of the mouse through the Mouseware control panel. I set mine for 100 (updates per sec?), the max being 200. Works smooth as silk for me, and this is with the built in video of the intel 815E chipset, so I don't think it's your video.

If this doesn't do anything for you, it's not your mouse causing the problem.

8. DMA already enabled previously
9. Checked startup (msconfig)
10. Installed Microsoft serial mouse and yes same problem :(

Now found a USB mouse to see what happens next...... :(

If the usb mouse doesn't work, then try unchecking everything under startup in msconfig and restart.

If that still doesn't work then you might want to try pulling all your ISA and PCI cards.

Then if that still doesn't work.........reinstall windows :D

Maybe it's your arm, :) try and cut back on the coffee ;) Sorry, I don't think that was much help.

Mixxen: I've tried all sorts of mouse pad surfaces, it doesn't make any difference, even with the 'Icemat' which is supposed to be a good mousepad.

you already have dma checked. i would also go into your bios and make sure your hard drive is set for auto...or that you at least have the correct pio mode set.
