I don't get it. My machine is acting like something is eating 100% CPU.. I mean, it's REALLY bad. Takes several long seconds to open a browser window, and I have a 900MHz AMD. I should mention I had the stupid sdbot backdoor on this machine for probably quite a while (Norton didn't catch it). Maybe the hackers did something odd to my registry. But I've checked my task list, and nothing odd is going on now.. yet my machine is really slow. Should I just reformat?

Thanks

Make to clean out your Windows/User Temp directory.
Also, delete IE Temporary Internet files.
Start \ Control Panel \ Internet Options \ Delete files

Did already. It's not that kind of lag. It's a very creepy, unnatural lag.. :)

I wouldn't format yet. Run a virus scan, make sure you have up to date virus definitions and make sure that you find and use a removal tool for the sdbot virus.

Go Here and get a program called RegCleaner. Run a full inspection of you're registry, and remove all unneeded keys etc.

What os are you running?

Have you recently installed any hardware/software?

You'll never believe what the problem was.

My 2nd hard drive's power cable was loose! Go figure.

Ugh, ok maybe that wasn't it. Hmm... and at 8am, for no reason (I wasn't using the machine) I got a blue screen according to the event viewer..

Error code 1000007f, parameter1 00000008, parameter2 80042000, parameter3 00000000, parameter4 00000000.

Not cool. I think I WILL reformat today... there's just too much junk going on w/ this machine right now.

I'd check for a virus or trojan ... based on your other thread in combo with this one.

Set your bloodhound settings to high and search you're harddrive for viruses. If that turns up nothing, search the Semantic website, and check you're windows settings, because you're hacker in Poland changed some of them.

Did the virus scan w/ high settings already, turned up other copies of the sdbot. Got rid of them. All is well now in that aspect. But that hacker could've changed any number of registry settings to screw my machine over.. that's why I think I'm just better off reformatting & reinstalling Windows. All my important stuff is backed up

I think ur hard drive is going, same exact problems were happening to me, my downloads (at school) would only download at like 3k/sec (as opposed to previously 300k at LEAST a sec)...then i replaced the HD, and VOILA!!

;)

hope ya figure this out!

UPDATE: I've reformatted.. a wise decision I think, because my machine was open to hackers for probably a week or so (sdbot) :( Bastards. Anyway, everything is great so far. Plus, I ran powermax and did the advanced test.. my hard drive was totally error-free.

Thanks, everyone, for all your posts & suggestions :)
