HELP! Why does my computer not want to start!?

Hi, all of a sudden my computer doesn't want to start. For no reason the monitor will turn off, and the pc will just sit there with the power lights on but nothing else happening. I don't think it's the hard drive because I ran IBM's hd diagnostic software on it while it was hooked up to my sister's pc as a secondary master, and it passed with flying colors. Also, if I disable "quick POST" it'll blank out before it even tries to read the hd while it's still checking the memory (memory check is much slower with quick POST off). I've had my computer for over a year without any problems. I don't think it's a heating issue because all the fans (1cpu, 1video, 2case, 1ps) are working and nothing feels hot. It will do the same thing no matter how long it has been since the last time I tried to turn it on. I don't remember what kind, but I also use thermal compound between the processor and hsf (chrome orb). My computer parts are listed below. Please somebody help me. I have no idea what could be wrong, and I don't have the time/resources to just switch parts in and out to find the problem's source. I hope someone out there can help me fix this because that would just suck in the biggest way if my computer were permanently dead. My data seems to still be good, but what good is data without a computer that works. Please help🙁

Sounds like it might be a power supply issue. Try disconnected the power to your cdrom drives and maybe remove a couple of your cards. See if it will boot then. Have you reset defaults in the bios yet?

exactly that same problem i had it all started with the monitor going out and then one day poor old MB stopped working

do a search on these forums and viahardware.com

its called the sudden death syndrome and it has happened to loads of MSI Pro 2 boards

if you look on almost evey forum in the world there will be something about them

and look inside pc switch on do you see 4 red leds ... then the board is dead

You wouldn't happen to know what the warranty on MSI boards is would you? I've had my computer a little over a year now and that would suck to have to buy another one, especially since I didn't have any warning. Also, if I do have to get a new motherboard, do you think Win2K will be able to "Plug n Play" it's way through it w/o me having to juggle a bunch of new drivers and settings? Thanks.

1 year for msi boards i am afraid but i have heard of them rma ing them after the time

i found a burnt resister by the cPU socket

and when i changed my board to a nice gigabyte one yes 2k did it pnp bit nicely but being like i am i formatted anyways

Yep, I have 4 red led's. I hope I can get MSI to rma this piece of junk. Thanks for your responses, guys. If anyone has any tips as to how to get a speedy replacement, feel free to share🙂

Hey Takedown...visit MSI's website and call the tech support #. Tell them your problem and they should RMA you a replacement. Mine did the same thing...up and DIED.
