Something strange is happening to one of my computers. Here are the symptoms:

For some reason, the computer will turn on and the fan will spin up, BUT the monitor wont come on. I tried unplugging the power for the monitor and plugging it back in, switching video cards, switching monitors, to no avail!

So THEN, I unplugged the 12pin power cord that goes into the mobo and plugged it back in. NOW the monitor comes on. the computer loads, but depending on what I do(system restore) it will restart by itself and the screen will go blank but the CPU fan will be spinning up as well as everything else.

I'm not sure what may be causing this. I thought it may have beena virus, but are there viruses that affect systems before they even boot. And why does unplugging the 12pin power cord remedy the problem, but just plugging out the power cord in the back does'nt.

I thought it was a software problem, but things just are'nt adding up. the simple fact that sometimes the monitor does'nt show, or the system comes on but the HD wont spin up. I dunno if i need a new HD or what.

I was wondering if anyone might have some suggestions. I'm willing to TRY ANYTHING and persue whatever means that will lead to a satisfactory end; whether that means buying a new PSU, a new MOBO, a new HD.

This is a compaw presario BTW.

Not necessarily.

If it's restarting while it's in windows without a BSOD, it means that you have BSODs turned off. They provide good diagnostic info so turn it on by right click my computer > Advanced > Startup and Recovery > Untick automatic restart. Then post the BSOD msg.

Edit: Just reread the post, how are you getting into windows if your hdd doesn't spin up?

I get into windows SOMETIMES. When i dont hear the HD spinup the monitor wont come on, bu hte PC will be running. HOwever, when the HD spins up, the monitor will come on. I just found a couple trojan horses on it and deleted them. Now i Am doing another scan and see if thats the remedy.

However, with what's happening, it sounds like a hardware issue so this si just weird.

I'll enable teh BSOD and post what it says.

Not likely to be a CPU issue, sounds like a motherboard, ram, or power supply issue. Run memtest to check your memory, but I think that is the least likely of the 3 to be the problem. Also check your motherboard for leaking or bulging capacitors, I have seen many compaqs die that way. Try another power supply if you can, but make sure the motherboard has no leaky or bulging capacitors first.
