Help! What's wrong with my CDRW??!!

I have a lite-on 40x burner. Recently, it's been acting up. The recorder buffer level keeps going from 98% to 20% and back up. As a result, the drive is only writing about half the time. It takes twice as long to burn a cdr now. I've had the burner for about a year now, it was working fine before and i haven't changed any settings or anything.
thanks!

I had a similar problem like yours but it turned out my CDRW drive didn't like using the 80pin ATA133 cables I bought, so I just threw in my old 40 pin ATA33 cable in and it worked fine. I'm not sure if thats what you're doing but thats what solved my problem.

DMA is on. The thing is, the burner worked fine for about 10 months. just recently started happening with the last 10 cds i burned. Should i try uninstalling it and reinstalling it?

That might help it. I'd also check your HD. It might not be getting information quick enough from the HD to keep up.

Check for new firmware for the drive as well. Linky

Drops to 20%???

Try using adaware and also scan for viruses.

You might also want to ctrl+alt+del and end odd looking tasks
just to see if some other program is hogging the cpu.

If you changed nothing and you are using the same cd's.
I'd say either the drive is dying or there is a software problem.

You can update the firmware, but I don't think this will help
because it was working fine before.

If you can, try using the burner in someone elses computer.

Are you using a different type of media now than you were before? For instance, my burner does Memorex CD's just fine at 48x, but my friend's noname 48x CD's won't even burn on my system at 8x without coming out as a coaster.

I had a similar problem but only when burning from certain HDs. After a long frustrating time I realized it had to do with me burning large files (Divx movies to be exact) from an extremely fragmented HD. When the file is a whole CD big and it composed of 200K fragments the HD just can't keep up with the burner!!!!!!!! I now keep my HDs defragged and no longer have the problem.

i think i found the problem with my cdrw.. the reason why it burns at 8X is because im copying from CD to CD..

I guess my liteon doesnt rip fast enough to burn faster..

however my TDK burner can burn at actual 24X when it comes from my Hard Drive.

Who wouldve thunk
