Help: What's a 4"-wide hard drive ?? (IBM DRVS-09D)

So the other day I ordered a couple of new OEM
IBM SCSI SCA 10K 9Gb DRVS-09D hard drives. I checked
to make sure they were 1" high, to fit in my hot
swap bay. Ordered them for a good price ($120 each).

THEN I did a bot more snooping, and discovered that
IBM specs these as 4" wide drives...Hmmm...I didn't know
there were 4" wide drives...I assume that means what
I think it means, which is, basically, they aren't going
to fit on the standard drive bay rails (made for 3.5"
drives).

Who uses 4" wide drives??!??

Anyway, I cancelled the order, in time. Or so I thought.
The place I bought them from made a mistake and sent them
anyway...I can refuse delivery. But should I? Are these,
as I understand, 4" wide drives that won't in a standard
drive bay?

Any help ASAP (since they're supposed to arrive in the
next day or two) greatly appreciated.

no, maybe it's some kind of technology that the disk's inside the drive are 4" I am sure they put it in some casing that's the standard size. It could very well be a typo. Dunno, if it doesn't fit, refund it :)

Good luck

Sounds like a standard HD to me... did a quick search and the dimensions are close to my Maxtor DM 40+ IDE drive, which fits into a standard 3.5" bay... I don't think you'll have a problem... :)

You don't have a problem there. The standard size for 3.5" drives are 4". Sound weird, but that because the the actual dimenstion of the bay is 4" and NOT 3.5. If the dirve is 3.5" in dimension, then you'll have trouble mounting it.

3.5" is the dimension of the circular platter inside the hard drive casing.
The casing itself will be wider than 3.5", so 4" is probably a standard size.

The round black floppy part of a 3.5" floppy disk is 3.5" in diameter.
They you have the extra size of the square part, and the sides of the drive and it fits in at 3.5" bay.

You should be fine.

Hey guys (all you who responded):

Thanks for the info...I learned three things today:

1) You can count on Anandtech-ers for good, FAST advice
2) Drive dimensions are wacky
3) I should accept the drives and be thankful they didn't get
cancelled in the first place.

Thanks again!
