Help! What Type of Setup Needed to Extend the Range of my Lucent Wireless Card

Hey, I currently have a Lucent/Orinoco Silver PCMCIA Wireless adapter and I would like to increase its range another 800-1500 feet. How would I go about to do this (like what I need, setup, where to buy, etc)??
I know it has an external antenna connector at the end of the card but I'm unsure of what hardware I need. I know I need to get a pigtail connector to link the card to the antenna and the external antenna but is there anything else I need (do I need to buy a 2.4G Amplifier)?
Also, what type of antenna should I get? I guess you need what application I'm using it for. I'm trying to connect to my friends accesspoint located across the street. There is a tree and a house partly in the way of line-of-sight.

My budget is $120 or less for the hardware.

Thanks

With regards to the Antenna, what dbi strength should it be? 8dbi ? 12dbi? and what is the conversion from dbi to feet (if possible)?
