I want somein that records HD signal. but little confused about all the diff types of HD recorders out there, what's all the diff betw all these tivo, dvd recorder <----o how can this one record hd when it clearly saids "DVD"?, . and which one is the best?

If your cable company or satellite provider offers it just get a DVR.

A DVR (Tivo) records to an internal hard drive, usually you can record two shows at once, a DVD recorder simply records to DVD media.

i dont have cable, satellite or anything, i just want to record hd off my local channels.i thought there are bunch diff types of hd recorders out there?is dvr and tivo the only 2 hd recorders?

I don't know how many retail HD DVRs exist besides the Tivo. You could build/buy a HTPC, but unless you have components lying around unused a TivoHD might be cheaper.

I have a TivoHD and it's very nice. $250 at Amazon, plus $400 for lifetime service or $12.95/month.

A DVD recorder won't record the feed in HD since the DVD standard only supports 480 lines of resolution.

I am assuming that you ware wanting to record over the air HD signals?

If that is the case you will probably need to put together or purchase an HTPC.

You cannot just go out and purchase a DVR without a subscription service.

As MrBond pointed out DVD is not capable of reproducing the HD signal given it's limited capabilities.

right, just over the air hd. ah no thx, I dont watch tv on my pc, so that's not an option.

what!?!?!? i cant just go out and buy a tivo or dvr and just record? wtf man? how lame is that? i can do it with my vcr, why not these?

this is totally lame, u spend a load buying a recording product and u need their subscription to record? wtf?

I'm in the same boat as you. I want something to record HD signals, but I do not have cable, sat., or even a TV. So, I bought an HD tuner card for my PC. The Windows Media Center in Windows Vista is absolutely outstanding.

There do not seem to be any reasonably priced HD DVR's that do not require a subscription.

IIRC, you can record on a tivo without a subscription but you are returned to the days of a VCR where you lose the programming information and are creating manual schedules.

You can watch recorded hd content from a htpc on your tv.

AFAIK the Tivo box will lock up and become a paper weight if you don't have a current subscription.

And a DVD is a storage medium, not a file system. You can record HD data onto a DVD, just not a lot of video.

Look into a HTPC. Mine is great for regular cable, don't have an HD card yet.

THAT is exacly what an HTPC is for....do a little research to see what you need, to get but basically you can output the signal from your HTPC to your HD tv.

Ah, apparently it was only the original tivos according to a quick google search. My mistake on that matter. I guess you could try to find an old one on ebay if you wanted to try that out.

1: id like to get an tivo just to record over the air hd, is this possible without subscription? if that is not possible will i be able to record over the air hd with tivo subscription or do i need cable or satellite tv subscription aswell as the tivo subscription?

2:im planning on getting a tivo on my electronic store tomorrow, how long does it take for the subscription to be activated?

Don't get a TiVo yet.

Wait to see if Dish Network releases in September the TR-50 (or maybe DTVPal DVR is the new name). It is going to be an over the air HD DVR with no subscription fees. You may also be able to find on the used market an LG LST-3410A or a Sony HDD-250 (HDD-500). I have the Sony and it records OTA HD for free and seems that it will continue to work after Feb 17, 2009. Not so sure with the LG unit.

I plan to buy a TR-50 when they come out next month (assuming they are under $500).
