Last night I was getting ready to install some new video drivers for my ATI AIW 128 Pro. First I thought I would install Direct X 9a......why not. So I went through that process and it told me to reboot...still fine. It rebooted fine and went through some process that checks your PC components for direct x compatability or something!! All of the sudden my PC just shuts down by itself. Maybe shuts down is the wrong term. The power light and hdrive light were both on...continually. Tried to turn it off with the power button, but that didn't work. So I unplug it...when I plug it back in.....right away the power light and hdrive light come on....it doesn't go thru any boot sequence....there is no feed going to the monitor. And everytime I unplug it now.....thats what happens. Did I destroy my trusty old Duron 1g ? Does it sound like my processor is gone? I have my old Duron 600 I will try and stick in tonight and see what happen. I am running Win2000, have an MSI 6330 motherboard. This trusty setup has not locked up on me in two years and have never had any trouble with it. Any thoughts ???? THANKS for any help or advise!!!!!

Try to reset CMOS.

Try with another videocard. Check all cables in the computer and unplug all unneccessery add-in cards as sound card, ethernet card and so on..

For me it sounds like something happend to your ATI AIW 128 Pro, and belive me, it's not DX 9 compitable ;)

But why won't the thing boot?? If it won't boot.....I can't check anything. As soon as I plug it in both power and hdrive lights go on and nothing, no boot nothing on the monitor, I couldn't boot from a disk if I wanted to. As far as I can tell I can't check anything!! I will try a diff video card and see what happens.

Thanks !!

I had the same symptoms when I lost my AMD 900 CPU. I put in an 800 Duron and the system booted right up, so try another CPU and see if that is the case if nothing else works.

Turn off your PSU, the black switch in the back, and then turn it back on. Solves my problem like this every time. If not that then try messing with your ram,

My system did the same thing, I came home one night and the power and HD light were on steady, all fans running and HD's running, but nothing. Had to pull plug to reboot. I looked close at the mobo after an hour of trying to figure it out and I finally found that there was a hole blown out in one of the Mosfets near the power connector. Bought new mobo and everything works fine now. I hope this isn't your problem, but give the mobo a good lookover just to be sure.

OK......last night I put in my old Duron 600..didn't solve the problem. Then I stuck in a diff video card....still no luck. I will try and fool with the memory tonight. My MSI motherboard has 4 LEDS on it that are supposed to help you diagnose problems....they are all red...the manual says check your CPU, and that isnt it. I just don't think its the motherboard, but maybe it is. Why doesn't it boot???? Could it be the memory? I love this machine...its been so dependable. Any more thoughts ???? I really appreciate all of your input!!!!! Thanks!! Could it be a power supply issue??

Also....I keep thinking it happended right after I installed Direct X 9a and it went through its compatability routine. Could that have effected by hardware. Is MS to blame here?

I think it's the motherboard. MSI uses cheap two-phase power on their boards, which makes them run hot and could eventually lead to an early failure like you have described. Check the board for blow capacitors.
