HELP! webcheck.dll is crashing my system

This weekend I felt brave and installed Internet Explorer 5.5 beta, and began getting GPF error messages pointing to webcheck.dll. I uninstalled 5.5, which took me back to 4.0, then I reinstalled 5.01. However, I'm still getting the GPFs. Anyone know what webcheck.dll is and if I can fix my problem? I assumed it was the Critical Update Notice, and it was crashing when Windows was checking the web for new updates. But I don't have the Update Notification installed.

Any help is appreciated,
Thanks, Rob

I don't know what webcheck.dll is, but I had trouble with IE 5.5 beta too, under Win 98SE, and I do use a utility called Coptech Webcheck that checks the web for updated versions of .pdf files whenever they're loaded. I don't recall any specific error messages per se, just minor problems withe the beta IE.

I believe I simply uninstalled all versions of IE, and then downloaded IE 5.0 or 5.01, and things were OK with Webcheck still in use. I also deleted the Windows Update as well as other of these other update thingies that are a nuisance IMO.

If you have Coptech Webcheck and don't need it you might try uninstalling just that, but personally I avoid beta programs most of the time nowadays.

I think I fixed it. I had checked "Automatically check for IE updates" under TOOLS. I've unchecked it, and no GPFs so far.

Crossing my fingers,
Rob
