I am trying to fix a friends pc. He runs Win98 first edition and not SE.

Win98
amd k2 400
64mb ram

He has this problem in which his pc after about 4min 30 seconds (I've timed it and it usually occurs at this time).

The problem is that after this time I think the virus starts to kick in and then you can't click on the icons in his desktop. The icons move away from you and you can NEVER catch up with the icons. They ALL move away from you when it does happen. But for the initial start up it doens't happen, only after the time 4min 30 secs then it WORKS and you can't click on any of the icons. I am going to start in safe mode and see if that happens

I am around his place right now trying to fix it. He has McAfee Viruscan. I am in the process of updating the dat file for him as hes not updated it in months. I don't know which version he has but I am trying to find out. I usually go to *Help* then *About* and it says in my other prorams as such. But its not in here.

Have any of you guys experienced this problem? This isn't a joke as it I have received a joke like this before but it stopped after the joke ended. This isn't a joke and I can't find a way of getting rid of it. Can any of you guys helpme out here.

Any help would BE GREATLY appreciated. I posted here as this has more views and people don't mind as its Off topic and I am around his house so I can help him out.

IIRC, that is a symptom of Win32.Magistr.A@mm or Win32.Magistr.B@mm virii. These are old virii, and any updated antivirus program should find 'em.

I am in the course of d/l avg and looking at the McAfee site to find out more about the virus's and how to fix it.

Thanks for the name of the virus and what does IIRC mean?

Since you're able to go online, try Antivirus.COM, then look for their free online scanner HouseCall. I've found it to be very good at "post-mortem" detection of viruses. But it sounds like you're on track already...

And I agree with Guyver -- this is most likely Magistr

Then teach your buddy to keep his virus protection current and turned on. Then to stop opening strange attachments and to stop using the file-sharing programs (like KaZaa, etc.). Then his virus problems will most likely go away...

Good Luck
