Help Wanted for Hypothetical New PC Build

Say I wanted to build a system with the following parts...

Intel Pentium4 micoATX Motherboard, Model D865GLCLK

This board features four (4) external USB2.0 ports on the back pannel AND two (2) internal USB2.0 headers.

Cooler Master ATC-610-GX1 microATX case

This case features two (2) external USB2.0 ports and one (1) FireWire port on the front pannel.

ADI 7 in 1 USB 2.0 Flash Media Bay Reader 3.5" Black

This reader connects to the motherboard via one of the internal USB2.0 headers.

---

Now, as far as I can tell, the motherboard has one too few internal USB2.0 headers. Don't I need a total of three: one for the Media Bay Reader and two for the two front USB2.0 sockets on the case? Would I be able to connect the FireWire socket on the front of the case to the mobo at all? If so, how?

Each of the two internal USB 2.0 headers can run two USB ports. The case's native front ports will occupy one header. I can't tell from the photo at Newegg whether the card reader uses a header as such, or whether it routes out the rear of the case and plugs into one standard USB port like my Lian-Li card reader does (mucho :camera:'s there, check it out). But worst-case scenario, your mobo has the correct amount of USB headers already, it looks like.

Newegg's photos aren't revealing what the end of the case's Firewire cable are like. I'll see if I can find anything on that. From the photo of the mobo, it looks like the FW header is the white one near the front-bottom corner of the board... checking on that too 🙂

You can kinda see the card reader connector head in this pic. The black thing under the left mounting screw. No clue on FW. How does that usually work? Do most new mobos come with an internal FW header?

Mr. Cheetah can fetch! 🙂 Photos showing that the case's Firewire plugs into a standard 6-pin FW port, not a header 🙂 Unfortunately, I now see that the mobo has no inherent Firewire capabilities, so you would need a Firewire card, preferably with an internal 6-pin port. 😛

Ahhh, I see the card reader's black plug peeking out, now that you mention it. I'm guessing it's like my Lian-Li and would only need one row of a two-row internal USB header. That means you will actually use up 1 1/2 of your mobo's two headers.

Nice find!

Now I know why they call you Elite 🙂

Truth be told, I need a J.O.B. before I can build anything new. I was just dreaming...and then some questions came up.

Thanks!

Sure thing, I learn a lot this way :Q

edit: d'oh, and I just learned that some of my pics don't work on my Lian-Li card-reader page 😛 I better go fix that...
