So i think i'm finally ready to retire my old i5 4690K and go with a new Ryzen r5 1600, Gigabyte AB350-Gaming 3 motherboard, and a 16GB kit of DDR4 memory.

I can get the cpu and motherboard for $259 + tax at my Microcenter with discounts. My real question is, what 16GB kit of ram to buy?

I know how picky Ryzen boards are and i know that it likes fast ram. I'm partial to G.Skill ram as that's all i've ever used. What ram would you guys recommend?

Microcenter has an EVGA 16 GB DDR4 3200 kit for a pretty good price. I currently have a set of that which I picked up at Microcenter running successfully at its XMP profile speed (16-18-18-38). I would recommend and the reviews on Microcenter.com are good.

Thanks, i was thinking of picking up that EVGA ram. I know it's made by G.Skill for EVGA so a bonus for me.

I run G.Skill RipJaws 4 3200 CL14 (samsung B-die) and they are great! Easy to clock up to 3333+ with tight timings. Downside is price ... I paid £188 for 2x8GB set.

Are you sure that is worth it? The 4690k especially overclocked is faster single-threaded than an r5 1600. It's at best a side-grade in my opinion and only worth it if you play BF1 multiplayer or do a lot of encoding or other productivity stuff.

Better to save more money and wait a bit. Nowadays it's hard to get enough boost to make it worthwhile to upgrade.

Yeah, i'm starting to second guess myself on this. I'm really not unhappy with my i5 and the computer is ultra stable. I don't like or play and of the BF series. I currently just play COD4, Titanfall 1 and 2. I'm guessing maybe a new video card to replace my GTX 970 might be a better option. Then i could move the 970 into my older AMD system and run it as a mining rig. Hmmm.......

If your games dont need more threads and productivity is not an issue surely keep your cpu. Why not. Get a new gfx if you even need that. Lol. I would just wait a year or two.

Thanks for the voice of reason krumme and others. I just happen to have some cash burning a hole in my pocket and thought why not upgrade? But on the flip side i should just deposit the money and upgrade later. I have no issues with my pc the way it is now.
