My goal is simple: I want to assemble the best machine I can for the least amount of cash, say $800.

My benchmark is what I would get from Dell/Gateway for the same price.

Overclocking is not an issue. All I want to do is put the thing together and have it work.

I think the Epox 8RDA+ Mobo is a good starting point with an athlon 2400+ and 512 MB of Kingston 2700.

Any input would be appreciated!

get prices on those components and then price out everyhtign else except the vid card... then use the rest of the fund on the best vid card that you can afford, and viola! a budget gaming system!

with $800 it shouldn't be too difficult ot build a fairly bad-ass computer... figure it this way:

proc - $100 (if you go 2200 instead of 2400)
mobo - $100 (guess-timate)
ram - $75 (from crucial, not sure about kingston)
case - $100 (you can get pretty pimp for $100)
hdd - $100 (80.0GB should be plenty for battlefield ;)
cd, floppy, keyboard, mouse, PS, etc - $125 (a quality enermax will run a good $50+)
-----
total: $600

that leaves $200 for a vid card
this can get you aw 9500 pro, or even a 9700 if you throw in a few more $$$

let pricewatch be your guide...

p.s. i hope that you don't need a moniter too! a cheap flatscreen 17" can be had for about $150

That looks like a good start that eklass listed out. The only major advantage OEMs like Dell and Gateway have over DIY at such a low budget is the fact that OEMs package software (like your OS) for basically nothing. Might not be a big deal to some people, but its something you should consider.

Your OS is probly only a concern if you want XP (IT's pretty nice).
Usually you can find a copy of 98 just collecting dust.

Anti virus w/ 1 year subscription cost $50-70
