Help w/ XP on a Compaq V5000 laptop.....

So, someone brought me their laptop at work today & she couldn't get the taskbar up.

No prob. Drug that sucker up after ticking "Quick Launch" on "toolbars". (Dunno why that worked, but it was the only thing that allowed me to grab & drag the taskbar back up)


New problem..........

#1.) No sound. (Googled some results, but need to be able to get online which is prob #2)

#2.) No network icons in clock tray no matter WHAT I try. No network connections visible in Control Panel.

#3.) Assuming it's a "administrator only" thing, I try to log in as administrator, but no password I've tried works. (none, password, admin, administrator, compaq)


Any ideas??

OK, have more info.

Can't get anything to show up in taskbar properties. (Where you would select what to have show in the tray) There's just no options whatsoever.

(Maybe still an administrator-only thing?)


But I *am* able to reinstall the sound drive from Compaq's utility built-into the start menu. It does do the reinstall, but still no sound.

Also checked the BIOS, but nothing in the menus about "enabling" sound.

Sound buttons on dashboard, above keyboard on laptop show the mute button permanently lit. (That sucker only shuts off during a reboot, then comes right back).

Totally lost on this one.
