Help w/ Remote Desktop

REMOTE DESKTOP
I'm trying to access my media server from outside the network using Remote Desktop. I've read this post and concluded that I need to 1) ascertain my "outside" IP address, and 2) set up the port to forward to the right computer. Or perhaps not, I'm not good with the lingo.

First, my dlink doesn't describe anything as "port forwarding," and I can't really figure out where it is. Anyone familiar with these?

After I get the router configured correctly, how do I figure my IP address to access the computer when I'm away from home - I've got a cable modem, is a dynamic IP going to foul things up?

REMOTE DESKTOP WEB
Likewise, I've got remote desktop web set up, and I can access it across my LAN by typing in the web address using the server's name. What do I type in to access it outside of my network?

Thanks, I doubt I phrased this correctly so please ask questions.

Pretty sure they make more than one DLink router so providing your model name would obviously help somone answer your question. I expect there is a port forwarding section and that it's called such but perhaps they use alternate terminology. Virtual server or something of that sort but again, without the model number looking at a pdf manual is going to be relatively difficult.

You can go to whatismyipaddress.com to found out your external IP, the IP the router is assigned. This assuming your even using a router. We can only make educated guesses with the lack of information. If you are and then have the IP address you would use remote desktop from a remote machine using that IP address. The default port for RD is 3389 I believe. That is the port you would forward on the router to your machine that you wanted to RD into.
