Help w/ OS crashing from file corruption

My operating system is crashing a lot when I go to install programs. When I select yes on the automatic restart, it goes to the BSOD. From there I can't restart without using the hard reset button on my case. When I go to startup again, it says that files are corrupted and missing. Last time the file was c:\windows\system\vmm32.vxd. I couldn't get the operating ssystem up and running again and was forced to reformat the hard drive and reinstall the OS. Some specifics:
CPU- AMD Athlon TB 1.0GHz
Motherboard- K7S5A chipset sis735
Harddrive- Maxtor 40Gb
Vcore- 1.76V

One time it happened while installing DirectX and another time while installing drivers for my Linksys Ethernet 10/100 LAN card. I don't know if it is my motherboard harddrive or power supply or something else.
