I've moved this drive from one VIA chipset machine to another a couple of times, but I've never tried to use the onboard sound, until now.

Current System:

DFI AD77 Infinity board
T'bred 1800+ @ 2 GHz
512 MB Kinston PC2700 DDR
GeForce DDR vid card
Win 98 SE with all updates

The onboard AC97 sound is enabled, and I installed the software that came with the board. I was also careful to uninstall the previous Sound Blaster software from the previous motherboard's onboard sound.

I can hear the speakers pop when I boot up, and I can play music CD's, but the normal Windows sounds and all online sounds don't work. When I try to use the volume control in that software, it does not come up. The same thing happens when I try to bring up the Windows volume control (SNDVOL32.EXE) -- it doesn't come up, either.

Any ideas?

What shows up in device manager? Any yellow exclamation points? Also, under sound and audio devices, check the audio tab and make sure your default device is set correctly.

Thanks. No yellow excalmation points, and the Avance AC'97 Audio Controller is there. I'm fully Ghosted so I may try uninstalling it and re-installing it, but I don't think that's the problem. The actual volume control program, SNDVOL32.EXE, is there, but when I click it from the Start menu (Start / Accessories / Entertainment / Volume Control) nothing happens.

I'm beginning to think it may be time for a full re-install of Windows from the ground up. Yuck! :p
