HELP! Volcano 5 won't "erupt"

Sorry about the corny title :p

Here's the deal... I got a new Gigabyte 7VRXP (2.0) to go with an Athlon XP1600, and a Thermaltake Volcano 5 to cool the proc. When I turn on the PC, the fan wiggles around a bit and then stops functioning. The CPU gets VERY hot quickly and the BIOS shows that, so I guess the fan "knows" it should be on but never starts spinning.

What could be going wrong?

TIA for the help

Either the motor in your fan is broken or you are not feeding it a stable voltage. Get a new fan at best buy or radio shack.

How can I find out if I'm not feeding it a stable voltage? Are you saying my PSU might be a POS (which I now suspect is the case)?

Yeah. Either your PSU is bad, or your fan is bad. More than likely, it's your fan. Try going into your BIOS, writing down the voltage readings, and posting them here.

It's probably just your fan header. Try to put another fan at the header and see if it starts or not. You could check your 12V line, but if only the fan header is broken, it won't tell you much. Have you had other troubles with yout PSU? If so, what types?

Thanks everyone for chiming in. Turns out it is the fan indeed that is bad, so I had that replaced and voila :)
Yay fellow Anandtechers!
