(Name already in use either as a service name or service display name) error

Dear all,

Last night, I discovered that Intel released new Wi-Fi drivers (13.1), so I decided to renew my drivers for my WiFi Link 5350. Turns out it is a big mistake, now I have lost wireless functionality on my laptop. I ran the driver executable (ICS_DV32.EXE), but it seemed to do nothing then closed itself. I went to the device manager and found that the driver version is still 12.4. I ran the executable again, and the result is still the same. I thought there might be something wrong with the exe so I returned to the Intel website and downloaded the ZIP version instead. After decompressing the zipped drivers, I went to the device manager and attempted to update the drivers manually. It appeared to work, at least the driver version has been changed to 13.1, but then I realized none of advanced options such channel width are adjustable and the system told me it could not detect any Wireless signals. So I decided to remove the device from the device manager and rebooted my laptop. When Vista loaded it informed me it has found an unknown device and I pointed Vista to search for drivers, then an error message pops up saying [DEVICE DRIVER NOT INSTALLED- Name already in use either as a service name or service display name] What is this??

How did that happen? Anyone have any ideas about how to fix this short of reinstalling Vista?
I have lost Wireless functionality on my laptop right now.
Please help me figure this one out.

I did some Googling and saw several posts involving the Name already in use either as a service name or service display name error, which seems to suggest cleaning up the registry and services. Um…what should I be looking for? The problem is that I got a Centrino laptop, so Intel is probably all over the registry. Is there a particular registry key or location that I should delete?

Thanks in advanced.

I decided to try if an earlier version of the driver would work, and sure it did.
It works with V12.2 that I kept around on my hard drive, now it shows up in the device manager as Intel WiFi Link 5350 (#25)
I wonder where Windows keeps tabs on the past 24 attempts...
