Help! Video files won't play

No matter what type of video file I open with windows media player 10 it won't show the video. ALl I hear is the audio. What is strange is I reinstalled all my codecs. Also, an image of the video is visible on teh thumbnail view. How do i fix this?

Go download a program called GSpot. It will tell you what codec(s) a video file requires for playback. Then download accordingly and you should be all set.

you need to install a CODEC PACK and or divx in general,

google for the k-lite codec pack it contains just about everything

and if you cant find it or are super lazy PM me and ill host it for you

I've installed the K++ Mega codec pack and videos still can't be seen in Windows media player. Is there any way I can erase ALL my codecs and then replace them rather than just reinstalling them?

they are listed in teh controll pannel someplace

im confused as to why that wouldent fix it, run gstpot on the file and see what it says,

how big is this file? anyway you coudl get it to me to check out?

It's not just one file...It's every single video file i have on my pc. THey worked perfectally in the past. ..
(What exactly should I be looking for in Gstpot I'm new to this program)

The files work in "media player classic"

humm still sounds like a codex issue, typically that big codec pack will solve it all, however i would double check on haveing DIVX 5.x installed as as XVID, thoes are teh 2 major codecs, and MPC plays everything so its a bad progi to use to judge things

I installed divx and xvid seperately and still i won't get video. WMV files won't work either (Even after installing windows media player again and reinstalling the wmv codec)

This is one of those freak problems....Could it have something to do with my recent ATI driver update?

i doubt it has to do with drivers. Forget about windows media player. Use video lan. it will play basically everything and you don't have to worry about codecs

a couple of my video files do that now too, after an update, the media player asked me if i wanted to play this bla bla bla file even though it didnt know what the file was, i said yes on one comp and it worked fine, i hit no on another comp and it wont play, it works in power dvd though, i dont know what happened

It is noteworthy that the videos won't play in REAL, WIndowsmedia, DIvX Playa,=. It does play in Sasami2k. What could be causing this problem?

It could be a bug we're seeing in Catalyst 4.10.

Open up your file in WMP (make sure you are in overlay mode Tools>Options>Performance>Advanced<make sure "use overlays" is checked>

then Open up Catalyst Control Center (if you're using it) and in advanced view, go to Video>Overlay settings, adjust the overlay settings with the video playing, we've got reports of Saturation and contrast levels are at zero after the Catalyst install.

Its not noticed by folks not using overlay (VMR modes) so it doesn't affect everyone.

Hope thats your issue.
