I just inherited an old slotA system. Athlon 500mhz, motherboard?, 256ram, etc.
And I just got done doing a fresh install of 98.

I can't id the motherboard at all. All I know is that it has the AMD 751 northbridge and the VIA southbridge (VT82C686?)
I've download and installed the AMD drivers for the 751.

I've now gone to this page-
VIA IDE driver page

The only thing is, there is no clear cut answer on what to use.
The 4in1's seem to install the bus master filter driver, but yet they seem to think the bus master miniport driver is better.

What should I do?
And is there anything else I should install? Like the usb filter?

You did the right thing with the AMD AGP mini port driver as for the rest of your system you can install the rest of the VIA 4 in 1 drivers (except VIA AGP driver) ,the USB filter driver does not need to be installed,if you do get USB problems then you can try installing it.

btw it does say at that site,"VIA IDE Bus Master Filter default installation for 98" so leave it at that.

<< IDE Bus Master Miniport Driver

Microsoft Corporation designs the driver layer specifically to be compatible with third party device drivers. For IDE controllers, the replacement driver is the SCSI miniport driver. It is located under the SCSI port driver and handles all hardware behavior of the IDE Controller and ATA/ATAPI Devices. The driver of the SCSI adapter also uses the interface to handle adapter and SCSI devices.

So you don`t really need that unless you have SCSI devices.

Install the AMD NB driver first, reboot, then the VIA 4-in-1 driver. The 4-in-1 driver (4.37) should autodetect which drivers to install.
