Help using Cain & Abel!?

So I'm in the networking program at my school and my teacher mentioned this piece of software in class a few days ago for password recovery/cracking and network sniffing. I decided to give it a try not knowing much of anything about it and heres where im at.

Basically im just playing around with it on my home network of two computers. Im trying to get it to crack any of my passwords (myspace, facebook etc.) I followed a couple of youtube tutorials and have been "sniffing" my network. In these tutorials when they demonstrate the password cracking it automatically shows their username/pw under the sniffing > password > http tab. However, when i do this from my computer it shows that im on myspace/facebook or whatever and in the username/pw part its in an encryption of some sort with just a bunch of numbers and letters. I've tried to right click on it and send it to the cracker within cain but it doesnt show up under any of the tabs, therfore im unable to attempt to crack it at all. Is there anyway of being able to get cain to crack these!?

note to admins: I wasnt really sure if posting about using this program is allowed or not? I know it can be used for illegal things. If this is the case, sorry and please lock/delete this thread!

Doesn't that program just use a bunch of brute force techniques? I don't think you're going to be able to crack any of your online passwords if that's the case. I think that it's intent is really for getting the password of another computer on your network.
