What we take for granted is not a given.
I work for a company of about 150 users.
I am implementing e-mail for the company; however the owner is resistant to e-mail because this is a company that he grew from scratch and is afraid that one flaming e-mail or a security flaw would create either a law suit or castatropic loss to the company.

We have a computer usage policy and are working hard on security because as you techies know - it IS important.

Please give me your thoughts on this issue. Good and bad. I would like to share them with the upper management to put this to rest.

Thanks all.

Just remind your boss that the company owns ALL email, and that abuse of it will not be tolerated. When abuse does happen, swift action on his part will negate any claims for a lawsuit.

IE We had a guy who sent out p0rn to his buddies at the office, a lady at the office saw this happen and reported it. Once an investigation of the charges had been completed, and the evidence supported her claim, this person was terminated on the spot, no questions asked. She then tried to bring a suit against the company, but the lawyer, during discovery, found out that action had been taken to eliminate the "hostile conditions" and she had no case.

As long as your boss handles situations in a decisive manner, he should be ok. It is when he allows trouble to continue and turns a blind eye to it that he could lose his business.

Do allow employees to save e-mail to their Hard drives. Put a time limit to how long an e-mail can be kept in an inbox and its acompaning folders ( for example 90 days is our company's limit). Has ulfwald, the company owns all e-mails sent by or received by empoyees. It is not illegal for a company to scan their e-mail for anything that does not meet company policy.

Here at the company I work for we use Imail 6.1. I just installed it about 2 months ago and it is rock solid. I think it cost about $600 if you just download it. You have to have a dedicated server for it though.
