help us develop virtual game servers

The hosting company I work for is wanting to develop virtual gaming servers. What this means is we want to install a virtual dedicated server on vmware, set it up to host a particular game (like TF2 or ETQW) save the image, and then be able to instantly deploy the image and have a small list of things to mod for each customer (like ip, etc).

Our network is one of the best on the planet and we are wanting to take advantage of that to offer some gaming servers. One of our clients, gamerail.com has a pop in our datacenter, so our pings times will be as low as possible.

Anyways, the point of this post is that we'd like to find some people that know how to run these servers and we might be willing to offer up a free dedicated vm for some time (along with free bandwidth) if once the server you setup is fine tuned, we can take a snapshot of it and re-deploy it for other customers.

Any takers?

You must have some beefy hardware to offer multiple game servers on a single VM box. ESX 3.0 I presume?

yup, typically the machines are 4 x quad core xeon's with 8GB-16GB of ram connected to an iSCSI nas.

I think my brain just had a geekgasm contemplating the processing power of such a beast. That's like 4x my computer (q6600, 4GB, 1TB RAID 0 SATA2)...ahhh, sweet geekgasm!

game servers take up alot of cpu power but think of it like this.. one core per server and you are good to go

and vmware infastructure ROCKS!

got 4 esx hosts at work.. adding more next year

I've always used vmware to host out low cpu applications in abundance, using it to host video games which are work horses seems backwards. I hope it works out good for you. Are you using vmotion with iSCSI luns meaning you can move your VMs around multiple ESX servers?
