Help & Urgent: Need advice on thermal pad or no pad

Hi!

I've got an urgent question, since my laptop is open in fron of me right now. I had to open and clean the thing, as it was constantly overheating and running in the 80 °C ranges. I found, that the HS / fan combo was completly dusted and stuff. I gonna do an Arctic Silver 5 mod on the HS / CPU part and also polish the HS with sandpaper and stuff.

But here's my question. On the main chipset chip was some therml pad that was already falling apart and didn't really attach to the surface of the chip anymore. So I pealed it off. Now my question:

Should I actually replace that thermal pad with a new one or just leave the chipset as it is? Will a thermal pad actually bring me some lower temps for the chipset ot will it actually kinda like keep the heat on the pad? I've read different views on this one. And as space is so small, I can't add a small heatsink to the chipset. So it's just heatpad or no heatpad.

If yes, does anybody know a place where I can order a heatpad online or get one? 'Cause newegg doesn't have any.

Thx in advance!!

if it uses the thermal pad to glue the heatsink down, you should use an adhesive, otherwise(if it uses screws/spring clamp) I'd suggest using non conductive thermal compound like ceramique.

Thx loba, but that's the problem: there's no HS for the chipset. All there was on it was just and only the thermal pad. So I don't know if the chipset is better off with or without a replacement thermal pad.

odds are something else makes contact with the thermal pad, like the bottom of the keyboard or some portion of the laptops heatsink (or the gpu heatsink). you will need a replacement thermal pad if its one of the really thick ones (~1mm)

if it's not the thick one, you might get away with one of these

what kind of laptop is it? if it's dell (any model, I'm a DCSE) I can tell you exactly what you need, if not I'd have to see pictures of what attaches to the top of the chip to figure out what you'd need.

Thx man, but I'm absolutly sure, that there's nothing attaching to the thermal pad of the chipset. There's just a space of about 2/3s of an inch of air in between. And the pad wasn't sticky at all, it was just there. And the laptop is a Yakumo with a Celeron CPU.

hmmm, I'd just leave it off and try it out then (kinda sounds like it's really just there to prevent any electrical contacts), and say good luck.

I wouldn't "polish" the heatsink with sandpaper unless you know how to create a perfectly flat surface with the help of a piece of glass.

Thx for your concern, but I polished about 10 HS by now and they all turned out to be very good and flat, so that's almost like an everyday's job for me by now, I just don't have any experience wiith those darn thermal pads. I always used thermal compounds or AS.

As for the thermal pad issue, i tend to get worried about scaling DOWN cooling from what the manufacturer has provided. I don't have an authoritative answer on the issue of thermal pad vs no thermal pad, but if you can find one, stick it on!

Good lucK!

If you really have that much clearance, you might want to consider getting a passive heatsink for the chipset - those usually come with an adhesive pad for attaching them (or you could use AS adhesive). Try http://www.svc.com and others like them for a selection of passive chipset heatsinks...
.bh.

I was thinking about putting a small chipset heatsink on that thing and after I made sure that there actually is enough space, I just did it and it looks fine. So now that thermal pad at least has some function by holding that lil' HS in place!

Thx for all your input folks!
