Hey guys i am planning on upgrading my computer, I think it has been 10 years id' say i still have a pentium3 733 mhz computer. I am looking to upgrade it but i was wondering if I can still recycle my old parts and put them to use on the new computer.
I have the following in my computer
733mhz
some mother board
1 gig of ram
agp 9600xt
and a 300watt power conductor in my antec case.

I was planning on buying the e8400 and a ddr3 supporting motherboard.

Though my question was whether the 300W power suppy and my case would be good enough to support these products??
I dont intend on spending too much, plus i love my antec tower.

Thanks, sorry for my ignorance

Current power supply wont be enough.
Current video card is AGP. New motherboard will be PCI-e

You're going to need a new power supply. Even if the power output were sufficient, power standards have changed.

I wouldn't bother with DDR3. It doesn't provide any tangible performance benefit, especially for someone whose systems needs are apparently pretty mild.

Buying a pre-built PC could provide you with the best deal for what you're doing.

That's all well and good, but in the end it's still a 10yr old psu. It should have died a couple of years ago. I'd keep it as a backup, but buy a new psu for a new build.

Power supply components degrade over time. I wouldn't trust the PSU to put out its advertised wattage at this point, and maybe not even 200W. It's time for a new unit.

Good point, that didn't come along until P4s.

Yeah, I've seen too many PSU deaths take out other system components to trust an old one.

About the only part of your build you can reasonably expect to recycle at this point is the case, if you really like it do a full rebuild inside and get some more years out of it.

Just check out the System Builder's thread for the latest recommendations for different uses. If you have more questions after that post back here for fine-tuning.
