HELP- Upgrade problem with Compaq

I'm trying to clean install Win2k or WinXP on a Compaq 5700T, but it won't let me. After it booted up from the CD and starting to Windows setup, the monitor then shut off and not receiving any signals, and the CD stopped spinning. I tried installing Win98 first then upgraded to Win2K, the Win98 installation went smoothly but if failed to restart when upgrading to Win2K. Is this common with Compaq PC? please help.
