Our company is getting ready for appraisals time. The first part is to do a self assessment of your work for the whole year. Now I’ve been on two big projects this year. One went ok, and the other one was a disaster.
Early in 2011 we had a contractor setup a health care management system (though not 100% done). There were major problems at the end of the year that affected other people’s projects that relied on this health care system. During the time when things were falling apart I was the sole company contact working with other contractors to get the system back on track. So all my colleagues saw me as the person taking care of the system. We had a contractor setup the HCS, and so when things started braking it was very difficult for me to work through this by myself as I was not an expert in the technology. When we saw problems, I immediately alerted management about the situation and worked on a plan to resolve the issues. I worked with the manufacturer of the system and a contractor to try and resolve the issues: with little success. Ultimately management decided to move forward with our year end projects that relied on the system. These other projects moved forward with a few issues, but got out. Management has decided to come back in 2012 and fully fix the HCS issues.
How do I talk about this horrible time on my self assessment? I had a friend who said "sometimes your on a project that’s doomed to failure through no fault of your own.”
